Plain-language glossary

CAC
Customer acquisition cost. State the acquisition costs, eligible new customers, and period included.
LTV
Customer lifetime value. A model that depends on retention and margin assumptions, not a known fact for a new product.
AOV
Average order value. Revenue on the stated basis divided by orders in the same period.
Churn
Loss of eligible customers or revenue over a defined period. State which measure and denominator you use.
Conversion rate
Eligible completions divided by eligible opportunities for the same action and window.
Attribution
A rule for assigning observed credit to touchpoints. It does not by itself prove incremental impact.
ROAS
Attributed advertising revenue divided by ad spending. It excludes many costs and is not profit.
Contribution margin
Net sales less variable costs, expressed as money or a percentage on a stated basis.
Positioning
The context that helps a particular customer understand why a relevant difference matters against an alternative.
Segmentation
Grouping customers by differences that matter to needs, access, decisions, or delivery.
ICP
Ideal customer profile. An explicit hypothesis about customers the offer can serve well and reach sustainably.
Activation
An eligible customer reaching the product’s defined first useful result.
Retention
Eligible customers returning for useful value over a meaningful interval.
NPS
Net Promoter Score. A recommendation-intent survey measure that should not replace task success or actual referrals.
Lead
A potential buyer or relevant contact. A lead is not automatically a qualified opportunity.
Opportunity
A potential sale with recorded fit, need, buying process, and next action.
Funnel
A sequence of eligible steps. Reliable funnel rates require compatible, matched observations.
Growth loop
A repeatable mechanism in which delivered value helps generate the inputs for another cycle.
Beachhead market
A specific initial audience chosen for relevance, access, and delivery fit.
Search intent
The task or decision behind a search, which should determine the useful page and next action.
Value proposition
A concise explanation of the useful change a customer can expect and why it is credible.
Payback period
Time for contribution from acquired customers to recover the defined acquisition cost.

Audience & belonging

Seth Godin

Serve a specific initial audience well enough that choosing and recommending you makes sense.

A small starting audience must still support the business. Expand when evidence warrants it.

The smallest viable audience Author essay
Search demand

Neil Patel

Match content and the next action to what the searcher is trying to accomplish.

Search volume is not customer demand. Follow visits through useful use and paid outcomes.

What is Search Intent? Author guide
Editorial quality

Ann Handley

Use a deliberate writing process, a recognizable voice, and original stories to deepen customer relationships.

Producing more AI text does not supply first-hand evidence or a distinctive point of view.

Useful search content

Brian Dean

Make the page answer the actual search intent, with the format and substance the task requires.

Inspect current results. Neither a keyword checklist nor a longer article guarantees ranking.

Community relationships

Mari Smith

Use relevant conversations and trust to connect social attention to a useful relationship.

Community permission comes first. We do not adopt unverified algorithm or personality-system claims.

Integrated distribution

Shama Hyder

Use analytics, customer context, curation, and connections between channels to improve the whole journey.

Cross-promotion only helps where audiences and needs overlap; ownership alone is not a reason.

Experience & referrals

Jay Baer

Give people a distinctive experience they can describe, rather than assuming competence creates word of mouth.

Delight must be repeatable and affordable. A share button is not proof of referrals.

Proof & persuasion

David Ogilvy

Study the product and customer, communicate a concrete benefit, and make the advertising earn its commercial purpose.

Historic advertising observations are not universal modern conversion laws. Test the message in its actual setting.

Offer design

Alex Hormozi

Examine the desired outcome, confidence in delivery, delay, and effort when shaping an offer.

A compelling promise still needs delivery capacity, willingness to pay, and contribution margin. No invented scarcity.

Market strategy

Mark Ritson

Diagnose the market, choose whom to serve and how to compete, then select tactics against a clear objective.

Do enough research to make the next decision; do not make elaborate segmentation a substitute for action.

Tactics without strategy is dumbing down our discipline Author column
Behavior & friction

Rory Sutherland

Investigate context and perception, and test plausible explanations beyond the most obvious economic one.

An interesting story is not causal evidence. Test honestly without hidden terms or manipulative pressure.

Audience influence

Rand Fishkin

Deliver useful content where people already spend attention; its influence may extend beyond referral clicks.

Unattributed influence is not an excuse to claim revenue. Keep platform reach, visits, and buyer reports separate.

Message clarity

Donald Miller

Center the customer’s problem and desired change, with the business guiding a clear next step.

A clear story cannot replace product proof. Avoid exaggerated stakes or promising a transformation you cannot deliver.
