Choose the decision before the channel

Marketing starts with understanding whom to serve and what they should choose you for.

Understand the decision

A channel is a way to reach people. A strategy explains which people matter, what situation you can help with, and why your offer deserves their attention. Choosing a platform first leaves the most important decisions implicit. You can publish consistently and still learn very little if the audience or promise changes every time.

Start by naming one customer decision. Someone might need to prepare for an interview, choose a weekend outing, or review a risky code change. Identify what they do today and the friction they would willingly remove. Your immediate objective can be learning whether the product helps. Revenue is relevant when there is a deliverable paid offer and a suitable payer, not as a substitute for understanding useful use.

Put it to work

Write three lines: the customer situation, the useful result you can currently deliver, and the uncertainty preventing the next decision. Then choose the least expensive observation that could change your mind. With no users, that might be watching a suitable person attempt the core task. With working usage but no sales, it might be a specific conversation about the offer.

Keep the time limit visible. Spend the first hour answering one question rather than filling a calendar with unrelated tactics. Afterward, record what happened, what remains unknown, and what you would change. A negative observation can be more useful than activity that merely looks productive.

Common mistake

Treating a posting schedule as a strategy, or assuming zero signups means zero visits.

Put this to work

Save a customer, one decision, a deferred tactic, and the next small check in the lab.
